Årtist in Commons

Express Yourself, Naturally.

Supporting Art as a Commons.

Surrounded by the beauty of nature, we become more fully ourselves—free from the roles we play, the need to rush, or the urge to make ourselves seem bigger or smaller than we are. From that place, we simply express what naturally arises within us.

At Årc, we think of art not in terms of its market value or commercial potential, but as creative expression and the pursuit of truth that arise from genuine curiosity and an intrinsic desire to express.

Årtist in Commons is a way for Årc and its Co-Residents to collectively support people who seek to explore and create from that place.

Why Årtist in Commons

A Society Where Pure Expression Can Emerge Is a Commons.

What the market values is not the only expression worth creating. Yet in a society strongly shaped by market forces, devoting ourselves to pure expression can be difficult.

Put simply, if we live in a society where "what doesn't make money doesn't get made," there are things the world will inevitably lose. We believe that a society where people are free to pursue expression for its own sake is itself a commons—something worth sustaining together.

What We Support

Artist as Co-Resident

In Årtist in Commons, artists stay as Co-Residents—sharing common spaces, meals, and everyday life while becoming part of the commons of Årc and the surrounding community.

At this stage, we don't offer a structured support program beyond what is described below. Our support is limited to what we can reasonably provide, so we ask artists to take an active role in their own practice and to help shape and grow this project together with us.

Stay at Årc

Artists are invited to stay at Årc as Co-Residents without accommodation fees, giving them time and space for creative work and research.

Stays range from two weeks to one month.

Bed Room

A private single room is provided.

The room type may vary depending on availability.

Facilities

Artists have access to the same facilities as other Co-Residents.

Paid options, such as laundry, are available at the regular fee.

Local Context

Depending on the nature of your work, we may be able to support you by sharing local knowledge, information, or connections within the community.

Circulation to Commons

What Artists Bring Back
into the Commons.

Artists have a unique way of stepping back, sensing the world, and expressing what they see. What they reveal to us has the potential to bring meaningful change to the world.

And what an artist creates is not limited to a finished work. The creative process itself—the questions they pursue, the perspectives they bring, and the way they live—can all become something of value to Co-Residents and people in the local community.

Årtist in Commons does not require every artist to produce the same kind of outcome or deliverable. Instead, we value each artist finding their own way to give something back to Årc and the community.

Documentation

Document the questions, process, discoveries, and learning that emerge during your stay.

Artwork

Leave a work or documentation at Årc or within the community, or make it available in a form that can be shared.

Supporting Co-Residents

As a longer-term resident, help support Co-Residents who arrive during your stay.

Sharing Your Story

Share conversations with Co-Residents about your perspective as an artist, your way of living, and what matters to you.

Local Relationship

Engage with local people and places, and treat those relationships with care and respect.

Fields of Art

At Årc, Art is not limited to fine art. It may include technology, research, architecture, agriculture, business, and other fields. What matters here is creative expression that arises naturally from within, independent of the logic of the market economy.

Applicants

  • People who are seriously pursuing and challenging themselves to go deeper in a field of Art as defined above.

  • People who resonate with Årc's idea of the commons and want to participate in its circulation themselves.
